A light - emitting diode is a semi - conductor based form of electroluminescence. It is built by taking a 'silicon wafer' (a thin slice of pure silicon) and adding special materials to parts of the silicon using a process called doping.

This changes the electrical properties of the silicon and current can flow in one direction only. Other materials are then added to this wafer of silicon to make it produce light when a current is passed.

By addition of different materials, led's can be made to produce light of colours in the visible light spectrum and also light in the ultraviolet and infrared spectrum.

These signs are used to provide diffused backlighting to images and is of particular use in street furniture where large signs need to be mounted on an evenly lit surface. The leds can be seen here mounted on the sides within the silicon.
